I can say from my own experience that the reason I’m here is because the system actually works and I just could not stay away from seeing the rather dramatic improvements that have occurred.

Join the team that’s revolutionizing education and redefining what’s possible!

Cajal Academy is a small, innovative non-profit school dedicated to developing and disseminating new educational approaches that match to the science of child development. We empower kids to discover their gifts through small, discussion-based classes of just 1-6 kids, project-based learning, close teacher-student relationships and new differentiation and social-emotional approaches that help students understand and overcome the challenges that hold them back. For our teachers, this is an opportunity to learn effective new strategies to further your craft, within an extremely close-knit and supportive team that is passionate about moving education forward, and to collaborate with teachers and expert licensed therapists across disciplines to create bespoke, standards-aligned project-based learning curriculum that challenge our kids to solve real world problems.

We are looking for teachers who are passionate about using data to meet kids where they are--and that have the depth of subject matter expertise that's needed to provide challenge to kids having very high analytical reasoning and/or creative thinking skills. You will be part of a deeply integrated, multi-disciplinary team including experts in neuropsychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech and language therapy, and applying groundbreaking approaches developed by our team to remediate--not just accommodate--children's areas of special needs. We are the only school in Connecticut or Westchester, NY offering academic programs and therapies tailored to the needs of this cohort of kids, and have brought transformative results for many of them that allegedly "can't be done."

Cajal Academy was granted Candidacy status by NEASC in June, 2023 and is working towards full accreditation. Cajal Academy is growing towards a K-12 school of 50 students; enrollment is currently just 11 kids, spanning grades 2 through 12. Cajal Academy is not a behavior management program, and does not admit students who display physical aggression towards others. Our social-emotional curriculum fosters a focus on fostering community, openness about one’s challenges and celebrating peers’ growth and development.

Now Hiring: Clinical and Teaching Positions (Start Dates Vary)

We are looking for creative problem solvers and flexible thinkers who are excited to join a dynamic and highly-collaborative startup environment. All teachers must have expertise in the subject matters that they teach and a passion to empower kids who are both highly intellectually-gifted and working through challenges that their mainstream peers often don’t even have to think about. All applicants must be comfortable developing curriculum, while implementing the educational strategies, protocols and approaches that are the cornerstone of Cajal Academy’s approach. This requires that you be both a self-starter and excited to work within a dynamic and collaborative team environment.

Ours is a “wall to wall” project-based learning school. Students attend ability-based, core skills classes in math, reading, writing, science, social studies and enrichment, with content coordinated to align to community-wide deep dives into real world problems that provide purposeful learning. This work is supported by our expert clinical team, through co-taught classes and weekly team meetings among all academic and clinical staff. Our program is competency-based, and delivered within a mixed age cohort to provide natural learning and social pairings within a cohort of children that tends to have highly-asynchronous academic and social development.

Cajal Academy serves a mixed age cohort of kids, some of whom may be several grade levels ahead of age expected levels in one subject and several grade levels behind in others. Many of these children easily form relationships with kids who are either older or younger than themselves, but struggle to connect with their same-age peers. Thus, Cajal Academy offers a mixed age cohort, providing for natural learning and social pairings, and our academic instruction is therefore entirely competency-based, focused on helping each child acquire their own next-step skill levels.
